#DailyHomily: What to do in Moments of Danger

Homily for January 17, 2018“You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” 1 Samuel 17:45.  And so it happened that this young shepherd boy was anointed by Samuel and life just returned to normal again. Samuel went back home, the brothers of David went back to their businesses, and the boy David went back to the flock. Honestly, it all felt like nothing has changed.I am not so sure if Samuel explained to David that by virtue of his anointing, he had already become the King of Israel. I am not also sure David himself was aware of the power already bestowed upon him otherwise, David would not have agreed to become the musician to King Saul. You see, nothing happens out of coincidence. It was not by chance that Saul became mentally derailed. It was necessary to make room for David’s entrance to the Palace. It was not also by chance that the people were attacked by…

Shikena. After saying that, humble yourself like a man that wants to borrow money and wait for the next question.2. WHY ARE YOU IN THE JOB MARKET?Biko, don't tell them 'because I want to make money o' or 'because I want to contribute to the development of the society'. How much would you be paid s…

#DailyHomily: Trust and Obey God; Do Not Bow to Human Pressure

Homily for January 15, 2018“Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop on the spoil, and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?... I have obeyed the voice of the LORD … But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.” 1 Samuel 15:19-21.  Our first reading this morning contains a rather painful episode of Saul’s rejection as king of Israel. When we put ourselves in the shoes of Saul, this reading suddenly comes alive and we realize we are like Saul in many ways. From this reading, we can see that there is no such thing as partial obedience. It is either we obey or do not obey. For Saul, his refusal to completely exterminate the Amelekites as instructed was justified in that he wanted to offer the booty as a sacrifice to God. However, as Samuel would clarify, obedience is better than sacrifice.Indeed, obeying God’s commandment is in itself a sacrifice. It is not easy…

#DailyHomily: The Power of the Sacraments

Homily for January 13, 2018“Then Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said, ‘Has not the LORD anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the LORD and you will save them from the hand of their enemies round about.’” 1 Samuel 10:1  Today’s first reading gives us the ancient origin of the sacraments. The moment Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it over the head of Saul, he instantly became the king of Israel. The pouring of the oil over Saul’s head was in itself a prayer and this type of prayer is called a sacrament. A sacrament is something we see physically happening yet imparting a deep spiritual effect in our lives. It is an outward sign of inward grace and grace itself is an UNMERITED FAVOUR.  Baptism is a sacrament, it is a prayer in action, likewise Ordination is a sacrament that turns a man into a priest. By his anointing at ordination, the priest is bestowed with powers that makes him capable of …

#DailyHomily: Stop Trying to Be Like Others: Be Content as You Pray

Homily for January 12, 2018“But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, ‘No! But we will have a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles.’” 1 Samuel 8:19-20.Today we read about how all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel to request that he should appoint a king to govern the nation of Israel. But then, beneath their innocent prayer for a king was a REJECTION OF GOD, an inferiority complex and a desire to JUST BE LIKE OTHERS. As much as we are free to ask for anything in prayer, we must carefully examine our hearts before we pray; we must be sure that our prayers are not motivated by envy of our neighbours; the desire to outshine others or purely materialistic pursuits. Dear friend, we can’t run away from the fact that some prayers are actually offensive to God. The Israelites did not have a king, God himself was the king, so by asking for a king, …

#DailyHomily: Prayer is Not a Matter of Command; It Requires Humility before God

Homily for January 11, 2018“So the people sent to Shiloh, and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.” 1 Samuel 4:4.Today’s readings juxtapose two examples of God’s intervention in human life. One in which God allowed the enemy to prevail over his children and the other in which God showed his power and might over nature by bringing healing to a leper. The Israelite nation was in battle against the Philistines who were obviously gaining the upper arm, in one day alone, four thousand men were slain by the Philistines. Out of desperation, the Israelites ordered for the Ark of God to be brought into battle ground. Without any prior acts of begging, they COMMANDED God into battle ground.Mind you, the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas who were directly responsible for the care of the ark did not show any respect at all for God. As we read i…
